low mood

Low mood is a common human experience that everyone encounters at times. It is a natural emotional response to challenges, setbacks, or changes in life circumstances. Experiencing low mood does not reflect personal weakness, failure, or inadequacy — it is a signal from the mind and body that something needs attention, rest, or care.

Low mood can vary in intensity and duration. Sometimes it is mild and short-lived, lasting a few hours or days, often triggered by specific events or stressors. At other times, it may persist for weeks or months, affecting motivation, energy, and engagement with daily activities. Persistent low mood may be a sign of an underlying condition such as depression, but even without a clinical diagnosis, it is important to acknowledge and address these feelings with compassion.

How Low Mood Affects the Mind and Body

Low mood can influence thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviour. Common experiences include:

  • Feeling sad, empty, or down for much of the day

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Changes in appetite or sleep patterns

  • Irritability or restlessness

These experiences are natural responses to life stressors or imbalances. The primitive brain, which governs survival responses, can amplify feelings of threat or negative thinking during periods of low mood. Meanwhile, the intellectual brain, responsible for rational thinking and perspective, may struggle to maintain balance, leaving a person feeling stuck in negative thoughts or self-criticism.

Low mood can arise from many sources, often interacting in complex ways:

  • Life events: Loss, relationship difficulties, work stress, or major life transitions

  • Physical health: Chronic illness, fatigue, hormonal changes, or pain

  • Sleep and lifestyle factors: Poor sleep, lack of exercise, or high stress levels

  • Cognitive patterns: Persistent negative self-talk or rumination

Importantly, low mood is not a personal flaw — it is a signal that the mind and body may need care, rest, or support.

Experiencing low mood is part of being human. Recognising and accepting these feelings without judgment is the first step toward recovery. Gentle self-care, supportive relationships, and small achievable actions can help shift mood gradually.

Therapeutic approaches, such as Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, mindfulness, or cognitive strategies, can provide additional support. These approaches help individuals reconnect with personal strengths, identify coping strategies, and create a vision of what life feels like when mood is more balanced.

Low mood is not permanent and does not define a person’s worth. With awareness, self-compassion, and appropriate support, people can regain emotional balance, motivation, and energy. Even small steps — like engaging in enjoyable activities, practicing relaxation, or seeking support — can make a meaningful difference. By approaching low mood with understanding rather than judgment, individuals can nurture resilience, hope, and a sense of agency in their emotional wellbeing.

How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help

Low mood can leave people feeling tired, unmotivated, or disconnected from the activities and relationships they value. While lifestyle strategies and support from healthcare professionals are important, the mind plays a powerful role in how we experience and manage these feelings. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a compassionate, practical way to support emotional wellbeing and lift low mood.

Low mood often arises from persistent negative thoughts, self-criticism, or rumination. These patterns are maintained by the primitive brain — the part responsible for automatic emotional responses — while the intellectual brain, which regulates perspective and reasoning, may struggle to intervene.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps calm the primitive brain and strengthen the intellectual brain’s ability to regulate emotions. By reducing mental tension and promoting a sense of calm, Hypnotherapy allows clients to respond to life with more balance and optimism.

Hypnosis, or trance, is a natural state of focused relaxation similar to daydreaming. In this state, the subconscious mind becomes more open to positive suggestions and new patterns of thought. SFH uses trance to:

Reduce negative self-talk and emotional overwhelm
Highlight personal strengths, resources, and past successes
Encourage constructive coping strategies
Promote feelings of calm, confidence, and resilience

Through guided visualization and gentle suggestion, clients can practice shifting from low mood to a more balanced, solution-focused mindset. Over time, these positive patterns can become more automatic, improving overall emotional wellbeing.

SFH emphasizes solutions and progress rather than dwelling on the causes of low mood. Sessions focus on what’s already working, setting small achievable goals, and imagining what a more positive emotional state looks like. This approach encourages hope, self-efficacy, and empowerment — key elements in improving mood and outlook.

Many clients report feeling lighter, more energised, and better equipped to manage daily challenges. SFH works alongside other support strategies, enhancing resilience and overall mental health.
