Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common mental health condition that affects how a person thinks and behaves. It involves two main components:

  • Obsessions: Recurrent, intrusive thoughts, urges, or images that cause anxiety or distress.

  • Compulsions: Repetitive behaviours or mental acts performed to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessions or to prevent a feared event or situation.

These obsessions and compulsions can consume a significant amount of time and interfere with daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life.

  • United Kingdom: Approximately 2.2% of adults in England have experienced OCD in the past week, according to the NHS Digital Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey  https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/adult-psychiatric-morbidity-survey

OCD can significantly impact various aspects of life:

  • Daily Activities: Time-consuming rituals can interfere with work, school, and social activities.

  • Relationships: Compulsive behaviours may strain relationships with family, friends, and colleagues.

  • Mental Health: Individuals with OCD are at higher risk for developing depression and anxiety disorders.

  • Quality of Life: Persistent symptoms can lead to a reduced quality of life and increased disability.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder involves repetitive, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and behaviours (compulsions) that are difficult to control. While OCD can feel overwhelming, it is not a sign of weakness or failure. The condition reflects learned patterns in the brain — and the brain is capable of change. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a compassionate, practical way to support this change.

OCD often arises when the primitive brain (emotional, reactive part) overestimates danger and triggers anxiety, while the intellectual brain (rational, problem-solving part) struggles to regulate the response. This imbalance can lead to compulsions — behaviours intended to reduce distress — that feel automatic and uncontrollable.

SFH helps calm the primitive brain and strengthen the intellectual brain’s ability to respond thoughtfully. By reducing anxiety and over-arousal, it becomes easier to resist compulsive urges and regain a sense of control.

Unlike therapies that focus extensively on past causes or triggers, SFH emphasizes solutions and progress. Sessions focus on identifying strengths, building small, achievable steps, and imagining a future where OCD no longer dominates daily life.

Clients often report feeling calmer, more in control, and better equipped to manage triggers. SFH complements other treatments, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or medication, by reinforcing a positive, solution-focused mindset.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy doesn’t “erase” OCD, but it helps transform the relationship with intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. By calming the nervous system, retraining the brain, and encouraging constructive responses, SFH empowers clients to reduce anxiety, regain control, and improve overall quality of life.

With patience, practice, and support, living with OCD can feel more manageable, allowing individuals to reclaim confidence, freedom, and inner peace.
